ANUBIS - ANPU

Anubis is one of the most ancient and significant deities in Egyptian mythology, revered as the god of mummification and the afterlife. Often depicted as a man with the head of a jackal, or entirely as a jackal, Anubis's image is associated with cemeteries and tombs, reflecting his role as a protector of graves and a guide for the souls of the deceased.

As the "Guardian of the Necropolis," Anubis was believed to oversee the mummification process, ensuring the preservation and sanctity of the body for its journey into the afterlife. He was also known as the "Weigher of Hearts," presiding over the critical moment of the Weighing of the Heart ceremony in the Hall of Ma'at. In this ritual, the heart of the deceased was weighed against the feather of Ma'at, the goddess of truth and justice, to determine the soul's worthiness to enter the afterlife. Anubis's role was to ensure the fairness of this judgment, reflecting his association with divine justice.

Anubis's worship dates back to the earliest periods of Egyptian history, and he was considered a powerful and compassionate deity who guided souls safely to their final resting place. His presence in tomb paintings and funerary texts underscores his importance in Egyptian beliefs about death and the afterlife, making him a central figure in their religious and cultural practices.
