Ocotillo Bark Tincture
The Ocean once stood where the lands now lay barren, and as it died it left its mark...
*Alchemize your Anger
Standing tall like a goddess of the desert floor, Ocotillo is far more than what meets the eye. Her prickly thorns warn predators to back off, and her height rivals that of many trees in the High Desert…but if you look past the thorns and the sheer magnitude you will notice little ribbons of green running like rivers along her bark, soft and tender. Her flowers in spring burst forth like a brilliant torch lighting the way through the desert. Her leaves provide shade for small creatures who need a break from the heat of the summer sun. Her resin smells sweet as her bark thickens. And if you peak beyond the thorns and the leaves and the bark, her gnarled bark is the purest milky-white, ushering in a sense of hope and calm.
Ocotillo is one of the last remnants of the Ocean that once claimed these lands. Her coral-like structure calls to the waters that she once called home, reminiscent of stalks of seaweed swaying in the current when she leafs in the summer. The Mermaid Goddess of the Desert.
In herbalism, there is a theory known as “The Doctrine of Signatures,” which states that when we look at a plant they will tell us exactly what they have an affinity for in the human body + psyche just by their appearance. Ocotillo is no exception to the rule. She simply oozes water energy - balance + fluidity are her primary medicines.
The medicine locked in her tender bark stimulates lymphatic drainage and improves fat absorption into the lymph system. She has an affinity for the pelvic region, breaking down fluid congestion, a champion for women + folk who bleed. And among all of her fluid movement in the body - we can still translate this to our emotional + spiritual self. Ocotillo has the ability to guide us in the alchemization of our emotions, especially the fiery, hot emotions such as anger. She helps to break down emotional congestion and relieve stagnation, opening us up to accept our emotions as a vital part of our daily lives and to truly feel them. She is a true Alchemist.
