Ashwagandha is well regarded in the herbal + holistic wellness community for its adaptogenic, immunomodulant, anti-inflammatory, nervine and tonifying properties.

What is an adaptogenic herb?  Adaptogens are a classification of herbs that help our bodies adapt to stress.  This doesn't mean that you won't ever experience stress in your life - because there's no silver bullet for stress - but it does mean that your body and mind will be more ready and able to combat the affects that stress causes.

As an immunomodulant + tonifying herb, Ashwagandha helps to fortify and strengthen our immune systems (by the way, that adaptogenic quality is a major player in this game!).  By making our body + mind more resilient to stressors, our immune systems are more capable when it comes time to fight off pathogens and illness.

Ashwagandha has also been shown to help lower inflammation in the body, calm frazzled nerves, assist in restful sleep (aka: shutting off that night-time monkey brain that just will NOT stop...), and even increase libido!  We absolutely love this herbal powerhouse, and include it in our daily herbal regimens.

Ashwagandha, like many adaptogens, works best when taken regularly.   Working with Ashwagandha can be done in many ways, from mixing the powder in to your morning coffee, smoothies, or a cup of warm milk - to making your own tinctures + decoctions (strong herbal infusion) with the dried whole root.

Safety concerns: It is recommended to avoid taking ashwagandha if you are taking thyroid medications or in some cases of hemochromatosis and hyperthyroidism.  Ashwagandha has traditionally been used as an abortifacient in some cultures.
